Son of a Pig Farmer

Pressed

March 30, 2006 · 7 Comments

So, I finally got off my ass and converted to Word Press. (Thanks for the help, Tom!) The export/import didn’t go as smoothly as hoped, and I had to drop a couple of posts. I have a text file with those entries that I will be using to repopulate those posts in the near future.

I didn’t want to do a huge visual overhaul, because I think the current look has a bit of equity left in it. I actually did a pretty diligent job of customizing the theme. Instead of simply replacing images (like kubrickheader.jpg), I went through all the PHP code and updated all the references with my new file names. Instead of simply deleting the blog title and descriptions, I just hid them in CSS, so the structure is still sound and accessible. I want this site to be less “hacky” than my old Moveable Type site.

There are a few posts that I’m missing, so, I’ll be replacing them over the coming weeks.

Nice job. The theme looks great.

And this change was needed because…?

There are tons of reasons. Here are some top of mind reasons:

-My old moveable type blog was not dynamically updated, so everytime I made a change to a template or a style sheet, I’d have to manually rebuild the site. Since WordPress is written in PHP, all site changes happen automatically.
    -WordPress is free.
-Tom already suffered the pain of moving to WordPress, so I always have someone to bug if something goes wrong.
-Gives me an excuse to learn (or at least be able to recognize) PHP.
-The Yahoo! UI Blog runs off of WordPress, so anything I learn here will benefit some of my professional responsibilities.
-Comment spam sucks. Sure, Moveable Type has some plugins to assist in fixing this, but (since my version was not dynamically publishing) they are a pain in the ass to implement.
-Lots of really useful plugins that are simple to install and configure. The Worpress developer community is also really active.

It’s all peer pressure… which means Ted can’t be far away from a WP blog… :)
