The BBC reports about 32 people dying when a steel ladle split, spilling molten metal on a group of people gathered for a quick meeting. Then, I was astonished to find the following fact at the bottom of the story.
Industrial accidents reportedly killed more than 127,000 people in China in 2005.
I totally get that they have a larger population, but still. Doesn’t it seem odd that that many people are dying in an industrially advanced nation? I wonder what the US number is.

“Astonished” is the feeling I get, too, reading this.

5734 in 2005. I wonder how that compares to the ratio of employed citizens.

This reminds me of an recent article in SingTao Daily (a Chinese Newspaper in bay area) about coal mining accidents happened in China– coal mining workers risk their lives working in a dangerous environment; in Nov 2006 there were 6-8 mining accidents. If workers die in an accident, their spouse couldn’t remarried or the spouse will lose partial compensation from the coal mining company…
With a huge population like China, life sadly doesn’t worth a penny.
