In a recent CNN story about Russell Simmon’s call for the restraint from using the certain words in Hip Hop, I found the following graph interesting:
The call comes less than two weeks after radio personality Don Imus’ nationally syndicated and televised radio show was canceled amid public outcry over Imus calling a women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos.”
Joel, you’re an editor. Can we get an AP style check on this. I always thought that the plural of ho was hoes. While we’re at it, they also refer to the word nigger. Make sure it’s not nigga. Thanks.

Hmmm. Maybe CNN is using the Chicago Manual of Style. http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html

AP is reactive when it comes to the vernacular (hence “hos”) and slow to change a rule once they do create one. For example, we all used to say “Web site,” and AP refuses to admit that no one (except for Gartner, anyway) uses that presentation of it anymore.

I have a big ‘garden’. I find that it takes two hoes to hoe a row.
I often like to hum while I’m hoeing around. Or should I write, “ho’n around”? I will puncutate my ho’n with a shout of Ho, Ho! That would be two ho’s.
